Engines are a focus of passion for petrol heads far and wide, and if engines are a point of passion, the 90s was the golden era of Japanese engines. Most of the country’s car manufacturers offered performance vehicles of their models which helped birth one of the most iconic engines, the 4AGE. The first generation was placed in the Toyota Corolla AE86, in 1983, one of Toyota’s classic vehicles.

Toyota’s A Series engines are a family of inline-four internal combustion engines with displacement from 1.3 L to 1.8 L. The engine was made as short as possible with cast iron engine blocks and aluminium cylinder heads. The 4AGE engine in particular is famed for being one of the best-sounding induction noises to come out of an internal combustion engine. We put that down to Yamaha helping develop the engine’s cylinder head for a sweet-sounding purr.

The 4A was produced from 1983 through 2000 providing reliability as the first mass-produced DOHC four-valve cylinder engine from Japan. The goal? To offer good fuel efficiency and performance as well as low emissions with a modern design. A truly iconic engine.
